Distance education will not disappear: some of the activities are planned for after the pandemic.

Part of the classes for high school students are held remotely. These are typically lectures and students are invited to attend lab classes or live practicals.

Although the educational community is more or less unanimous in recognizing that the quality of contact education is better than distance education, some universities in the country say that they are considering part of the activities and are carrying them out remotely afterwards. of a pandemic.

Distance learning will increase

About a fifth of the classes are held remotely at Vytautas Magnus University (VMU). According to the rector of the Vytautas Magnus University, Juozas Augutis, the conferences usually take place remotely and usually involve the largest number of students.

These distance conferences are held at the university since the beginning of the school year. There are also cases in which teachers and students have jointly agreed to conduct the classes remotely, as long as this does not affect the quality of the studies.

The rector J. Augutis emphasizes that most of the conferences are still held in contact, and those that are held remotely are prepared for such a way of teaching.

According to J. Augutis, even before the pandemic, Vytautas Magnus University taught some classes remotely, for example, this is how educational management was taught. The material for these sessions was prepared specifically for telecommuting, so that foreign students or expatriates could join.

“It just came to our attention then. Some students who have jobs are busier, maybe some would like more distance learning. Others, on the contrary, would like to have more contact. Of course, the natural sciences majors , agriculture and engineering need to learn more by contact, because it is inconceivable how practical and laboratory classes can be carried out remotely, ”says J. Augutis.

J. Augutis does not rule out the possibility that after the pandemic, more activities than before will be carried out remotely.

“There are a lot of foreign students at our university and as we know it is not always easy for them to get there due to the visa regime, the pandemic will feel long enough. In order to facilitate and maintain a sufficiently high quality of studies and students, we will actually offer part of the studies (run – aut. last.) remotely, ”says J. Augutis.

Currently, if students are unable to attend the contact sessions, that is, if they do not have the passport option, they can join the conferences remotely.

“It is something different than giving a conference remotely. They can see and receive all the material that the students see and receive in the classroom, but the teachers do not work specifically with them, giving a lecture. They listen to the sound, they see the image, but these studies are not complete, ”says J. Augutis.

Vilnius university

The experience gained will be used in the future.

At Vilnius University (VU), some classes are also held remotely. According to the VU Vice Chancellor for Studies, Valdas Jaskūnas, certain study programs at the university have been decided before the government decides how the studies will be carried out.

According to V. Jaskūnas, some study programs are still moving towards greater contact.

“In any case, at VU we have agreed that face-to-face classes are available to all students, regardless of the study program they study and we apply this principle. The study programs themselves, their committees already decide which part and what is taught, ”says V. Jaskūnas on tv3.lt.

Lectures are often delivered remotely. It is usually chosen to organize them remotely due to the large flow of students.

“We have study programs where a fuel is 200, more than 200 students. Naturally, we think that such an accumulation of students in one room is probably not desirable in the current epidemiological situation, ”says V. Jaskūnas.

According to a VU representative, the university also employs professors who would take risks because of their age, illness or other reasons by attending contact classes, so they are given the opportunity to teach remotely.

“There are classes in which the teachers, having acquired the experience they have acquired in a year and a half, take advantage of it and distance learning is of the highest quality. Returning to the question of how long that distance learning will stay with us, I think this experience determines that it will be one of the usual forms of learning, ”says V. Jaskūnas.

VGTU

Students lose contact education

Some classes are also taught remotely at the Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (Vilnius Technology). Ilma Cikanaitė, head of communication at the university, says that all first-year undergraduate students study continuously.

Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors, and Masters study semi-contact. This means that some sessions take place in contact and others remotely. Conferences for them are held remotely, and practices, laboratory classes and assessments are conducted in person.

Those who do not have a passport opportunity do not attend the conferences. According to I. Cikanaitė, there are very few such students.

“There are no big massive requests to go all the way. Older people tend to get more requests because a lot of things work. For teachers, he (distance education – aut. last.) is perhaps even more convenient in terms of time planning. The first and second courses work as is. The first course is happy with the contact information, ”says I. Cikanaitė.

Vilnius technology aims to keep contact education for freshmen for as long as possible. First-year students are noted to attend classes in an exemplary manner.

“It’s rewarding, it means they want live lectures and we’re trying to do it. For the second course, which had almost no contact last year, there are practical classes, and also very good attendance. You can see that the students yearn, they want to study by contact ”, says I. Cikanaitė.

However, it is not urgent to reject hybrid or blended education. According to I. Cikanaitė, this is what students can expect in the future.

“If there are university alliances where several universities come together and share science modules, where they can have a part of their studies at another university while sitting in Vilnius, those modules will be. I believe that all universities will try to make him live (classes – aut. last.). Let’s be honest with ourselves: the contact learning process is more fluid and assimilated, and the students are more focused, ”says I. Cikanaitė.

According to the Statistics Department on Monday, COVID-19 has more than 91 percent immunity. VU students, more than 86 percent. Vilnius tech students and nearly 83 percent. Vytautas Magnus University students.
