Disaster in Kaunas: a plate fell on people at the construction site of the bridge over the Neris: 3 injured, 1 killed on the spot

On January 27, at 2:08 pm, a notification was received at the General Emergency Center at 112 on the emergency number that a license plate had fallen on a person at a construction site operating on the highway from the island of Kaunas.

Kaunas County fire and rescue forces were dispatched to the scene.

How 15 minutes Said Džiuginta Vaitkevičienė, spokesman for the Kaunas Fire and Rescue Board, three of the victims were handed over to doctors, one died on the spot; his body was stretched out under a fallen plate.

It will be clarified if more people have been harmed.

Police officers and firefighters and rescuers are working at the scene, and three ambulances are parked.

The disaster took place in Kaunas during the construction of a new viaduct over Jonava Street and a bridge over the Neris, which will become part of the country’s main artery: the highway.

In october of last year 15 minutes was given the opportunity to to observe closely the very interesting part of these exceptional constructions: the works of pushing a metal floor over the river, like a 300 meter long bridge weighing thousands of tons, gradually jumping over the river and connecting its two banks. Information on the boards used was then provided.

It is estimated that a total of 42 sections of 60 tons each will be needed to build the bridge. The sections are manufactured in the Polish city of Gdynia and delivered by welding to the bridge construction site. There are 20 workers at the welding site, a total of about 70 at the construction site, divided into two shifts.

The bridge is being built by AB Kauno tiltai.

The entire project, which includes the construction of a new bridge over the Neris, a viaduct over Jonavos Street and the planned connection road on the right side of the main highway A1 Vilnius – Kaunas – Klaipėda, will be completed in 2021. September.
