This smuggling of smokers was detected on July 25 at the Raigardas roadside after inspecting the cargo transported by a truck in transit through Lithuania to Poland, reports the Criminal Customs Service (CCS).
The Daf truck, driven by a Belarusian citizen, carrying a shipment of Russian coal from Russia to Poland through Lithuania, arrived at the Raigardas roadside post Friday night to Saturday.
Although the driver stated that there was nothing prohibited not to carry, but one of the customs officials decided to check some bags with a metal detector.
When the device reacted, the entire cargo was inspected in detail and it turned out that only part of the bags contained the declared product.
The remaining charcoal was mixed with various quantities of 50 and 70 packets of Belarusian cigarettes “NZ 10”. Incidentally, the cigarette bags were stacked in the middle of the load, and the pure carbon bags covered them on the sides and on the back of the semi-trailer, as a kind of “armor” to protect from inspection.
Due to the complexity of the inspection (the work is very dirty, the cigarette packs are covered in charcoal; customs officials joke that successful transportation would have required carriers to wash them), it is still unclear how much contraband is carried in this truck. Each bag of coal will have to be inspected, according to officials, Daf transported at least 25,000. packages
So far, after inspecting a small part of the cargo, 3,750 packages of smokers have been found, whose value, including taxes, is almost 13 thousand. euros
A pre-trial investigation into smuggling was launched at the Kaunas branch of the Criminal Customs Service (CCS). The investigation is led by the Kaunas Regional Prosecutor’s Office. The detention measure for the tractor driver is a cash deposit.
