For several months, no agreement has been reached on who will chair a major conference on the future of Europe, which is expected to last two years.
According to Politico, European Union (EU) legislators, diplomats and officials have started nominating potential new presidents, including former Danish Prime Minister Hhoring-Schmidt, former Italian MP Enrico Letta and D. Grybauskaitė.
Former Finnish Prime Minister Alexander Stubb, former German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer and former chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier were previously appointed.
However, as Politico points out, so far national leaders of EU member states and members of the European Parliament have not agreed on who should chair the conference.
The conference is designed to engage citizens across the continent in finding ways to rebuild and modernize the EU. It is believed that without an agreement on the presidency, the conference may not start this year.
The idea of a conference on the future of Europe in 2019 was raised by French President Emmanuel Macron.
