Some Dakar Rally participants expressed their dissatisfaction with the rule changes that were made to improve safety during the race.
In response to the deaths of motorcyclists Paulo Goncalves and Edwin Straver at this year’s rally, organizer Amaury Sport Organization (ASO) has taken action and adjusted the rules. To slow down motorcyclists, it was decided to limit the number of rear tires. Thus, in twelve days, each motorcyclist will be able to use only 6 rear tires.
That left us unsatisfied in the 2018 and 2020 Dakar Rally Winners.
“It is good that the organizer is taking action. If such changes try to make the competition a bigger and more exciting adventure, then all is well. But if this is done to improve security, and that is your goal, then it is complete nonsense. It will not delay us. In the best case, the pace will slow down by 3 km / h, ”said 2018. rally winner Matthias Walkner.
“We always try to drive to the limit. So the more a tire wears, the more difficult it will be to control the motorcycle. The good news is that there is a lot of sand here, so the tires will not wear as much. But such decisions should not be taken without consulting the athletes. “
The winner of this year’s rally, Ricky Brabec, was not satisfied with the rule changes.
