Toyota driver Nasser Al-Attiyah says he will not participate in next year’s Dakar Rally unless the rules are changed. they are favorable for buggy racing athletes.
The athlete, who triumphed in the rally three times in the past, was second for the second year in a row, after the X-Raid athlete driving the mini buggy. This year, N. Al-Attiyah is 15 minutes behind Stephane Peterhansel, who triumphed in the rally for the fourteenth time.
In the last six years, athletes who have driven Peugeot or Mini buggies have triumphed five times. In 2019 alone Al-Attiyah, who was driving an all-wheel drive Toyota SUV, briefly managed to end a string of buggy victories.
“I am satisfied with the work we have done. We worked hard. Neither I nor my co-driver nor the team made mistakes. But what else can we do? This is the second year we have fought and lost against buggies. We need fair rules.” Al-Attiyah said.
“No matter how much we push them, we cannot compete with them only on speed. Athletes who drive buggies have already won five out of six because the rules now in force were in their favor. I hope the organizers take action and change them. Otherwise, we will not be interested in returning to the rally. “
