Gabriel, the first high-ranking official in Brussels to receive such a diagnosis, said on Monday that he had decided to isolate himself because one of his team members had been confirmed to have a coronavirus.
“After the first negative COVID-19 test on Monday, the second is positive,” said Gabriel, a 27-member European Commission member representing Bulgaria.
“I have been isolated since Monday and I will continue at home, following the rules. Be healthy and safe! ”Added the European Commissioner.
The European Commission is based in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, which is currently one of the European cities most affected by the coronavirus pandemic, as are Madrid and Paris.
EC President Ursula von der Leyen had to briefly isolate herself on Monday due to close contact with a person infected with a coronavirus, but she herself was not approved for COVID-19.
Last month, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, was forced to postpone the EU summit for a week because one of the security guards on his team had infected a virus.
