Last Friday, three men and a woman were detained by Tverečius Border Guard officers from the SBGS Vilnius Border Team at the entrances to Vilėkai village, Ignalina district. From here to the border with Belarus: about 3 kilometers. Two men and one woman had passports of Iraqi citizens. A third man presented SBGS officials with an excerpt from the country’s return certificate issued to an Afghan citizen.
After the arrest, the migrants applied for temporary territorial asylum in Lithuania, and the SBGS launched an investigation. Foreign applications are processed by the Immigration Department.
“Detainees were isolated at Ignalina municipal premises. Migrants have been protected by border guards since then. On Wednesday, the SBGS received information by phone that after tests by foreigners at the COVID mobile checkpoint- 19 in Utena, the result of the Afghan sample was positive, ”the SBGS stated in the report.
Eight SBGS officers used security measures both during the arrest at the entrances to the Vilėkai village and later during the protection of migrants at the Ignalina facilities. Now they have to isolate themselves, the border guards will be evaluated to detect coronavirus.
