Radvilė Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė, the senior of the Lithuanian Christian National-Democratic Union (TS-LKD) faction, sent a letter to the Seimas Board with a proposal to form a working group of all parliamentary factions to prepare the proposed amendments after to consult with the public, scholars and parties.

“We see that there are many initiatives in parliament to adjust one aspect or another of the electoral system. Let’s say that the opposition Social Democrats are proposing changes in the financing of parties and political campaigns. We see that the coalition partners are talking about lowering the age limit, it is an initiative for minor corrections, ”Andrius Vyšniauskas, the elderly deputy of the TS-LKD faction, told BNS.

“We do not want the electoral system to be changed by individual, small initiatives, we believe that this year is a time when both the systems and the regulations of all elections can be reviewed normally,” he said.

When we talk about the electoral system of the Seimas, we believe that the time has come to discuss in a normally normal way whether the mixed electoral system meets the expectations of society, – said A. Vyšniauskas.

According to the member of Seimas, it is necessary to evaluate the procedure for direct elections of mayors and the regulation of public electoral commissions during municipal elections. It is expected that in the spring the Constitutional Court is expected to receive an explanation on the compliance of direct mayoral elections with the Constitution.

According to A.Vyšniauskas, it must also be examined whether direct presidential elections correspond to his powers.

“When we talk about the electoral system of the Seimas, we think that the time has come to discuss, in a generally normal way, whether the mixed electoral system meets the expectations of society,” said the MP.

According to him, conservatives believe that the transition to higher proportional representation in the Seimas should be discussed in more detail, as the boundaries of single-member electoral districts must be redrawn before the constant change in the number of voters before each election. parliamentary. .

“During the next elections, we will have unique members, who will cover the territories of four municipalities. Those districts are becoming illogical, they reduce the representation of the population of the region, at that moment the representation of Vilnius is increasing ”, affirmed the Conservative.

He recalled the project of the former Social Democratic Justice Minister Juozas Bernatonis on the formation of multi-member regional electoral districts during the Seimas elections.

“We think it makes sense to talk about it seriously, because it hasn’t been done recently,” said A. Vyšniauskas.

“But before doing all that, we must self-assess what we gain and what we lose. What we cannot do is we cannot do without the regional representation of the population. That would be really bad, “he added.

Now, the Elections Law of the Seimas stipulates that 71 parliamentarians are elected in single-member districts, 70, in multi-member districts, that is, according to party lists.

According to A.Vyšniauskas, the revision of the electoral systems was debated in the ruling coalition and received a positive reaction.

“The coalition really supports this, the leaders of the parties and factions spoke, it was agreed with the president of Seimas,” he said.

Paulius Žeimys, representative of the president of the Seimas V.Čmilytė-Nielsen, told BNS that, in the opinion of the Speaker of Parliament, the question of the efficiency of the current electoral system of the Seimas arises quite often.

According to her, the Liberal Group also supports an in-depth discussion on this issue.

According to conservatives, this is the best time to change the electoral system, as there are two years left until the next election: self-government.
