Vilnius territorial customs officials detected illegal smokers on Saturday inspecting a train arriving from Belarus with construction materials.
MKT reported that during the inspection of the concrete slab wagon, customs officials suspected a discrepancy between the declared and actual weight. And after drilling one of the plates, the officers noticed traces of tobacco on the drill.
When the plates were lifted and dismantled, it became clear that inside the plates were metal boxes filled with illegal smokers – Belarusian “NZ” cigarettes.
Due to complex demolition works, the contraband has not yet been fully accounted for, but according to officials, about 240,000 are hidden in the plates. cigarette packs, the value of which, with taxes due, is approximately 850 thousand. euros.
A pre-trial case on smuggling has been initiated at the Vilnius branch of the MKT and is led by the Vilnius Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
Similar smuggling has already been detected at the Kena railway post this year. January 14 customs officials 100 thousand. A shipment of cigarettes worth 1 million euros was found hidden in a shipment of reference blocks transported by train from Belarus. The cigarettes were packed in iron “cages” and covered with cement.
According to customs officials, cigarette smuggling by rail has been one of the fastest growing trends for several years. Therefore, it is very important to install X-ray control systems for regular inspection of rail transport as soon as possible.
