Concerned for the life of the sheikh’s daughter trying to escape Dubai: no evidence that Princess Latifa is still alive

On February 19, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights asked the UAE government to provide proof that the daughter of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Emir of the Emir of Dubai, is alive.

The request was made after the British public broadcaster BBC published a video in which the very princess of Dubai who made it says that she is captive and fears for her life.

Latifa’s father, 35, is the vice president and prime minister of the United Arab Emirates. Dubai is one of the seven emirates of the UAE.

The princess has not been in public view since March 2018, when she tried unsuccessfully to escape the emirate.

OHCHR spoke with the UAE diplomatic mission in Geneva.

“We have had discussions with representatives of the UAE government in Geneva, but I cannot report any concrete progress,” OHCHR spokesman Rupert Colville told reporters on Friday.

When asked if there was any evidence that Princess Latifa was alive, Colville replied, “Not yet.”

The BBC said the video it aired was filmed about a year after Latifa was captured and returned to Dubai. In the post, the princess is seen squatting in the corner of the bathroom.

The undated video was shown after Latifa’s friends expressed concern that they were no longer receiving secret messages from her, the BBC said.

In a statement issued last month, the Dubai Royal Family said the princess was “cared for at home.”

“His family has confirmed that His Highness is cared for by loved ones and medical professionals at home,” the statement said.

“Princess Latifa is improving and we hope that she will return to public life at the right time.
