Over the weekend, temperatures in western Lithuania dropped to minus 24 degrees. Although the Klaipeda homeless had already crashed into a shelter before the weekend, on Saturday they had to fix two problems standing outside. I also had to take care of a young man lying in the snow who didn’t seem to have a place to live. They took him to the hospital.
Several Klaipeda residents also made their way to the hospitals, who escaped and were injured. However, according to the ambulance doctors, there were not many such people: several injured residents of the Klaipėda region needed medical help over the weekend.
Broken glass
Several Plungė residents faced another problem over the weekend: too distant, the balcony glass is missing.
“It just came to our attention then. It is not clear why this happened. The only explanation is cold,” 15 minutes Kazys de Plungė said.
He soon read on social media that several other city residents faced the same problem on Sunday. For the broken glass, the man turned to home insurers.
15min photo of the reader / Coincidence or not, but the glass of the balcony was broken with force.
On Saturday night, part of the apartment buildings on the Klaipėda highway and Vasaros street were without power in Palanga. Worried, because part of the apartments here are heated with electricity.
Residents were alarmed when they couldn’t call services at night and the house was getting cold. The mayor of the Šarūnas Vaitkai resort was also contacted. Later it bothered him that finding help at night was a real challenge.
In Kretinga, part of the population experienced interruptions in the water supply. People were alarmed that they were to blame for the cold, but a fault was soon reported that was said to have been unaffected by the cold.
Paulius Ugianskis, head of the communication group at the city maintenance company City Service, said that after speaking with administrators, it was discovered that the cold did not pose a serious danger. “We did not register any explosion of pipes or radiators. It is true that between 20 and 30 old houses were isolated due to the supply of hot or cold water. However, these are temporary problems that have already been eliminated or are being eliminated,” said P Ugianskis According to him, the inhabitants of the apartments were warned that they were waiting for the cold and what to do so that the negative temperatures do not damage the home.
The icicles were a danger

In Plungė, firefighters went to a kindergarten, where icicles hung dangerously from the roof of the building. Firefighters broke dangerous chunks of ice.
“By monitoring the weather, we believe that quarantine restrictions have helped prevent other disasters. Usually in that weather, groups of fishermen would gather near bodies of water. Now, despite the bans, they avoided going to the lagoon. Therefore, there were no reports of disasters. Only one report of broken ice was received. In the district of Skuodas, a four-wheeler broke into the pond, but did not suffer, “said Aurelija Maslauskienė, representative of the Klaipėda Fire and Rescue Board.
The cold is reported to have claimed the lives of eight people in Lithuania over the weekend.
