On Tuesday, the negotiating groups of the Lithuanian Christian National-Democratic Union (TS-LKD), the Liberal Movement and the Freedom Party met in the Seimas to discuss the agreement on the future coalition. After the meeting, the party leaders assured that little was left until the end of the negotiations.
“We basically agree on the direction of the work, there are several points of discussion. It can be summarized that it is due to 80 percent. we agree, 20 percent. it remains for an intense discussion, “said Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, president of the Liberal Movement.
TS-LKD leader Gabrielius Landsbergis said that he assessed the progress of the negotiations as good, although something still needed to be negotiated.
“Now we just need to look for more precise wording that meets all expectations,” he said, avoiding naming what is causing the disagreement.
When asked directly if we would see the goal of legalizing same-sex couples in the coalition agreement, G. Landsbergis gave the floor to Aušrinė Armonaitė, the chairman of the Freedom Party.
“We are still in negotiations, we will continue the discussions,” he replied. “We will seek newsrooms to address those issues.”
Landsberg said that some of the aspirations of future partners would not be reflected in the government program.
“The most important thing is that we agree on how that document should be.” Today, until tonight, we will make corrections based on what has been said, “he added.
Create a joint group to fight COVID-19
The leader of the Freedom Party, A. Armonaitė, assured that the future partners agreed to establish a working group that would be interested in handling the situation in COVID-19.
“Now it is very important to address the situation in COVID-19, to seize all the knowledge that current institutions have. We will create a working group of people delegated by our parties on the measures of COVID-19.
We mentioned the budget, its priorities, as well as the urgent work, ”said the politician.
Regardless of how the coalition negotiations unfold, the COVID-19 issue is urgent, said V. Čmilytė-Nielsen.
“We agreed to delegate people to a group that would prepare for a good transition and that the new coalition would be ready to take over the job, and it would be ready in these two areas,” he said.
“We have maintained a working relationship with doctors throughout our work in the opposition, so it is not difficult to seek advice or some information. Today we agreed that this work will be formalized after the coalition partners delegate to the people, ”said the conservative candidate for Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė.
A working group of party representatives, he said, will work to develop a COVID-19 management plan that is easy to integrate into the government’s program.
The parties will meet with another group to review the budget proposal presented by the current Cabinet.
“For the budget review, we will form a similar working group or a joint committee of coalition partners,” said I. Šimonytė.
All party leaders assured this time without talking about how they would share the portfolios of ministers or who would occupy the position of Spokesperson of the Seimas.
“We would first look for personalities who could adequately represent and lead the field,” Landsberg said.
Seimas Comments:
