“We have a consensus on this in the coalition,” the head of parliament confirmed on Wednesday to the LRT “Topic of the day” program.

He stated that the draft Association Law is practically prepared, it is expected to be registered in the legal base of the Seimas in the near future.

“I think the project will be registered in the near future. Basically, it has already been drafted, discussed several times. In the next few weeks, I think it will be registered,” said V. Čmilytė-Nielsen.

According to her, it took time to adjust.

“There are many hopes and expectations in the project, because tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of people have been waiting for such a project, they have been waiting for more than a decade, I would say that it is natural that we are trying to prepare adequately for it. “said the Speaker.

Seimas members Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Tomas Vytautas Raskevičius, Paulė Kuzmickienė, Andrius Navickas, Ieva Pakarklytė and Eugenijus Gentvilas drafted laws on the legalization of couples not only between men and women, but also between people of the same sex.

As reported by the news portal delfi.lt at the beginning of May, the project proposes that the association be defined as “the fact of the coexistence of two persons (partners) registered in accordance with the procedure established by legal acts, with the aim of to create and / or develop, protecting relationships with partners ”.

If the partnership is registered in a civil registry office, both partners can choose the other partner’s last name as the common last name or choose a double last name.

The bill proposes to establish that assets acquired during the partnership by or on behalf of both partners are considered partial joint property of the partners, presuming that the partial joint ownership of the partners is the same until proven otherwise.

It would be easier to end a couple than a civil marriage, where in all cases, even when there are no children, it is necessary to go to court. In the case of a society in which there are no children, this could be done by a notary.

In Lithuania, the union is not legalized for men and women or same-sex couples. Several previous attempts by liberal politicians to legalize civil union in the country have not reached the stage of adoption in the Seimas.
