Čmilytė-Nielsen: Should be considered an emergency if necessary

“I think it would be necessary to consider this issue due to the state of emergency. Now I hope that the restrictions that have been established will work. And that the number of infections and deaths will decrease. We will see very soon if these measures have been successful,” said Thursday the President of the Seimas V. Čmilytė – Nielsen before the Seimas session.

At that time, former Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis, when asked about the speeches of the current rulers on the introduction of the state of emergency in the country, did not hide his surprise.

According to the politician, the current rulers themselves criticized the decisions of the outgoing government to close bars and restrict public activities.

“It just came to our attention then. They should be asked when they were sincere, then or now. That politicking, when we took the necessary measures, made people question whether it was necessary. Now they have received the situation themselves and speak the same phrases and arguments, ”said S. Skvernelis.

He said that many people no longer take the threat of the coronavirus so seriously.

“It is difficult to recover everything now with strict measures. If people do not understand and do not want to, they will do nothing, not during curfew or with other harsh police methods,” added S. Skvernelis.

Delfi recalls that in an interview with BNS G. Landsbergis said that the Seimas could declare a state of emergency in Lithuania if citizens did not comply with the quarantine conditions imposed by the Government to control the spread of the coronavirus.

“If it were decided, or more precisely, if there was a need, if the numbers did not fall and the public did not understand that the situation should be taken seriously, then the Seimas would be asked to impose additional restrictions on the Seimas,” said G. Landsbergis in an interview with BNS.
