Circumstances of the fatal fire in the hospital: the culprit of the disaster has been identified

Patients from the Department of Surgery at Vilnius University Hospital had to be rescued from the fire and smoke on Saturday.

As a result of the fire, hospital staff evacuated 39 patients, two of whom were seriously injured: one man was poisoned by smoke and the other, the alleged culprit, died.

The fire in the hospital broke out around 11 am The inhabitants of the neighboring houses, who noticed that the smoke was rising through the windows of the eighth floor, called the General Assistance Center.

A smoke detector was installed in the room where the fire broke out, but for a reason not yet determined, it did not work.

As firefighters made their way to the crash site, hospital staff also shuddered. He began evacuating everyone from the eighth floor, including 90 percent. the culprit of the body’s burning fire.

The 53-year-old man was rushed to the intensive care unit. Doctors tried to revive him, but the effort was unsuccessful: the patient died an hour and a half later.

A 78-year-old man treated in a nearby room who had been poisoned by the smoke also lost consciousness, but recovered from being connected to a high-pressure oxygen device.

According to the hospital representative Asta Bagdonavičienė, the patient who died during the fire was an antisocial person and had mental disorders.

It is suspected that he tried to smoke in the bed or set it on fire and was poisoned by vapors.

Experts will determine the exact cause of the fire, but it is already clear that the fire occurred in the bed from which it spread to other elements of the room.

The bed, wardrobe and other items were burned in the room. Other rooms of the Surgery Service were also attended.

Numerous fire forces were dispatched to extinguish this fire: eight car tanks, two car ladders, and a staff car.

Firefighters put out the fire in about 40 minutes.

None of the hospital staff who rescued the patients were seriously injured, but they and other patients were tested to ensure that they were not intoxicated by the fumes.

After the facilities were ventilated, some patients were allowed to return to their wards, some were transferred to other units.
