On the other hand, S. Cichanouskaja emphasized that he does not consider his activities in government to be a job in exile: “Circumstances forced me to leave, but Belarus is my homeland. I am convinced that we will soon be able to return to a free country, “the opposition candidate said in a message posted on her official Telegram after a press conference held on Friday by members of the opposition Coordinating Council.

“S. Cichanouskaja go KT [Koordinacinė taryba] “It continues to conduct peaceful and legitimate negotiations on new elections and calls on Belarusian officials to join the process,” the report said.

Earlier this week, Cichanouskaya’s Telegram announced that the opposition leader had begun to form a shadow government.

For his part, Pavel Latuška, a member of the Coordination Council, commented on the sanctions previously imposed by the EU on Friday on some 40 members of the regime of President Alexander Alukashenko of Belarus for manipulating the presidential elections and cracking down on protesters.

According to him, “Europe spoke with one voice and showed solidarity with Belarus.”

Mr Latuška was also surprised by the statement by the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs “accusing the EU of not wanting to enter into a dialogue”.

“It was the Coordinating Council, supported by international institutions, who repeatedly suggested finding a way out of the political crisis through dialogue,” he recalled.

For the second month in a row, protests are taking place in Belarus against the results of the presidential elections on August 9. Its winner was Lukashenko, who has ruled the country since 1994. The opposition and Western countries consider these elections to be rigged.

Lukashenko held a secret inauguration last week, but several countries have declared him unrecognizable as the legitimate president of Belarus.

The mass protests in Belarus since the elections have been suppressed by bloody means.
