The reasons for this decision were commented on by the club’s general manager Pavel Astachov, who confirmed that Russian Andrei Malcev, who had been working as R. Kurtinaitis’s assistant for some time, would be appointed to the position of Chimki’s head coach.

“All those who have loved and supported Chimki for many years – fans, supporters, partners – did not expect us to find ourselves in such a difficult situation and our team will show such poor results.

We really appreciate the contribution of R. Kurtinaitis to the development of the club, the best pages in the history of our club are related to him. However, in the current situation, we had no other choice. We have decided to fire Rima and appoint Andrei Malceva as head coach.

He is a good Russian basketball specialist, he has the experience of the head coach and many titles with youth teams, he is familiar with the working methodology of the best European basketball specialists. After evaluating all the pros and cons, we decided to give it a try and take over as the team’s strategist, ”the club quotes Astachov on the news announcing the dismissal of R. Kurtinaitis.

So far, the club does not specify who will work as A. Malcev’s assistants, but Serbian Aleksandras Trifunovičius and Lithuanian Aurimas Jasilionis should remain with them.

Rimas Kurtinaitis in the position of strategist of the Chimki club

This season, the Chimki team led by R. Kurtinaitis won only 7 of the 30 matches played in the Euroleague and the VTB United League.

Chimki’s team, which was on a particularly poor budget, looked like an elite Euroleague tournament, where they managed just 2 wins from 20 matches and roared to the bottom of the tournament table.

The defeat of the Anadolu Efes basketball players in Istanbul on Thursday finally filled the club’s cup of patience. The absolutely defenseless guests lost the match by 39 points (60:99), the biggest defeat for Chimki in the history of the team’s participation in the Euroleague. It was the loss of 12 teams in a row in a tournament.

Chimki’s series of defeats in the Euroleague

Overall, Chimki no longer had to attack in the Euroleague below this season. If at the beginning of their series of losses R. Kurtinaitis’s students still often applauded their opponents, the latest results speak for themselves.

Of the last four games, only Barcelona, who lost 12 points, managed to fight a little more seriously. Chimki lost 17 points to Piriakia Olympiakos basketball players, 27 points to Kaunas Žalgiris and 39 points to Anadolu Efes.

To be fair, it should be added that earlier in the season, the Khimki team was the victim of adverse circumstances and a coronavirus pandemic.

When the virus entered the team, R. Kurtinaitis continued the struggles in the Euroleague with a small group of players and did not postpone the match, which was then made by other teams, relying on the updated Euroleague regulations.

R. Kurtinaitis has led Chimki since January 2019, when Greek team Georgis Bartzok took over.

Overall, this was the second stage of the Lithuanian leadership of the Chimki team. The first one started in 2011 and lasted until 2016, when the coach was fired.
