Vilnius municipality has completed the first stage of digitization of cemeteries in the capital: the system already displays data from three cemeteries in the city of Karveliškės (78 ha), Rokantiškės (40 ha) and Verkiai (3.6 ha).
On the interactive map https://zemelapiai.vplanas.lt/kapines/ you can find the graves you are looking for by last names and first names, and detailed orthophotos show how to get to those rooms.
The system can also see the territory of the cemetery: its limits, sectors (neighborhoods), queues, cemeteries formed, and the administrators of the cemetery can see cemeteries, roads, etc. free, busy and monitored. Half (121.6 ha) of all Vilnius city cemeteries have already been digitized.
The capital municipality was the first in Lithuania to link all digitized information from funeral magazines to cemeteries. This linking of information allows cemetery administrators to stop leafing through old funeral records for information about people buried in the cemetery. Thanks to the map, the municipality of the capital will be the first to provide an electronic permit service.
The idea of inventorying all Vilnius city cemeteries came from the City Administration and Environmental Protection Department, which was smart to streamline the burial permit application process, create a database of cemeteries and buildings on them and keep their records.
“We are probably the only ones in Lithuania who have such an inventory. The map will serve not only employees, but also residents, who will be able to quickly and easily find the burial places of their loved ones. A lot of work has been done. To create the map, we used detailed orthophotos that were precisely identified and geographically linked graves.
In the second digitization stage, all the remaining cemeteries belonging to the city will be digitized this year and next, ”said Gintautas Runovičius, Head of the Department of City Management and Environmental Protection.
The digitization of Phase I took approximately one year. The creation of the digitization system, digital information management and cemetery administration cost 161 thousand. euros
