Not allowed to dream
Gailutė and Danius have been married for more than four decades. They graduated from the same school, lived in neighboring towns, for which they have known each other, so to speak, for a lifetime. They name mutual respect and the ability to forgive as the secret of their marriage.
The couple have been living in their apartment in Kaunas for more than 30 years. Although the apartment is neat, the interior and furnishings are outdated and the residents of the house have not been happy for a long time.
Vibrant seniors spend most of their time on the site: here they take care of their grandchildren, watch TV, read books and Ms. Gailutė also embroiders. In the same room during the holidays they also accept the whole family with children, who no longer fit at the table. The housewife said that although she had wanted a more modern home for a long time, she did not even allow herself to dream about it.

The beloved painting became inspiration
Seeing the change of site, the housewife was even upset. The room has become unrecognizable brighter, more spacious and more modern. The interior designer Ūla Žebrauskaitė was inspired by the painting of the older couple.
“The interior color solution, where natural colors predominate, was dictated by a paint with a natural motif, which the owners definitely wanted to preserve. In the old interior of the room, the paint on the motley walls almost disappeared. Meanwhile, by choosing a bright, monochromatic color for the walls, the artwork was revealed. Also, I used wood patterns in the interior, because the owner worked with wood all his life, ”reveals the source of inspiration to IKEA interior designer Ū.Žebrauskaitė.

How did you manage to enlarge the room?
Although the site is not so small and small, it seems cramped. The interior designer says that effect is created with massive furniture, dark colors, and a host of different patterns.

“The first step is to replace the furniture with other more modern and functional ones that don’t take up as much space. I chose bright furniture for the interior to make the room appear larger. I used just a few colors and a wood pattern. To liven up the interior, I chose colored textiles, which can be easily changed when they get bored or change with the seasons and thus substantially update the overall image, ”says Ū.Žebrauskaitė.
All items in a closet
A large portion of the senior couple’s website has been running for three decades. Instead, along the entire wall of the room, the interior designer herself designed a bright, tall and elegant wardrobe, in which books as well as souvenirs and tableware with textiles were found.

“The combination of closed, glass and open cabinets doesn’t look boring, but at the same time it doesn’t clutter up the room. You can display what you are proud of or want to admire behind the glass door and hide other accessories behind it.
Finally, the whole family at a table.
The elders Gailutė and Danius are happy today: during family gatherings, they will finally be able to seat everyone at a large table. An interior designer’s secret here is easily transformable furniture.

“The folding table does not take up much space in a room where only a couple spend time with grandchildren. However, during family gatherings, it will be easy to transform and comfortably seat all the guests. Guests can stay and spend the night: a sofa, where the couple will watch TV during the day or Ms Gailutė will do embroidery, and it will easily turn into a bed, ”says ”.Žebrauskaitė.
