Changing recently and quickly attracting the attention of new settlers, Žemieji Šančiai will soon receive positive changes.
Taking into account the comments of the local community, a new project was developed for the planning of the territory along the Nemunas. The Kranta Alley apartment buildings will be reached by central heating from the city, and convenient parking, a road for local residents, and modern walking and biking trails are planned alongside the house. Much attention is also paid to landscaping: more playgrounds, new greenery, convenient and accessible access to the river for everyone.
The area will be managed in a complex way
“After presenting the Nemunas Embankment Street Renovation Project last year, we received a lot of discussion, feedback and feedback. We have taken them into account and together with the designers we have prepared new landscaping solutions, with which we will invite all Kaunas residents to familiarize themselves, ”said Aloyzas Pakalniškis, Head of the City Management Department of the Municipality of Kaunas .

The Šančiai territory began to expand remarkably in the 19th century. In the mid-19th century, industrial activity flourished, so more and more factory workers developed around it. A little later, the Kaunas Fortress barracks complex appeared here, and in the interwar period it was one of the fastest expanding Kaunas suburbs overall, eventually approaching the city center.
The time has come to shine with all the beauty of the Nemunas embankment street in this area, which has long been unattended. The dusty gravel road so far does not grace this space, and locals are still forced to wander the narrow streets to their homes on Kranto Alley and have to park their cars there.
The objective is only one and very specific: to organize in a comprehensive way and turn this area into a comfortable space that is accessible to everyone.
The adjacent one of the first cycle lanes in Kaunas has long been an important connection between different parts of the city and no longer fulfills its full function: due to its insufficient width, pedestrians and cyclists cannot get there safely. Its flows have increased significantly here during the warm season.
“Changes are taking place throughout the city, so Žemieji Šančiai is no exception. We can see that more and more young families are settling in this district, companies are being established here. The whole territory must be developed in Consequently, the objective is only one and very specific: to organize in a comprehensive way and turn this area into a comfortable space that is accessible to all.
We believe residents will appreciate the perks provided by the designers: separate bike and pedestrian paths, a safe street with elevated crossings, more greenery, parking lots integrated into the general environment, playgrounds and other recreation areas, and ramps that they lead to the Nemunas. . people with mobility problems or mothers with wheelchairs can also use it, ”said Paulius Keras, deputy director of the Kaunas municipal administration, to the planned changes.
Cheaper heating for hundreds of families
Changes to the Nemunas embankment street will begin with underground works. So far, 9 multi-apartment homes on Kranto Alley have supplied heat from spent natural gas-fired boilers. Both for its maintenance and for the gas consumed, around 400 households had to significantly empty their pockets. Installing new boilers would have cost even more.
As a result, a part of the residents of various apartments applied to the Kauno Energija company a few years ago for the possibility of connecting to the district heating network. Others are still considering this possibility. Chancellors should decide to get cheaper heating later this year. It is estimated that connecting to the city’s grid will reduce heating bills by about a tenth.
“To connect the house to the district heating network, Kauno Energija included this investment in the plan. It will be coordinated with the State Energy Regulatory Council and other institutions in accordance with the established procedure.
By connecting the aforementioned apartment buildings to the district heating network, their residents will pay one of the lowest prices for heating in Lithuania, ”said the company’s CEO, Tomas Garasimavičius.
Residents no longer have to worry about the regular renovation, operation, and maintenance of decades-old gas furnaces. The installation of heating points in apartment buildings will be almost a third cheaper than the renovation of existing boiler rooms.
More convenient transportation
Laying a district heating route to apartment buildings near Nemuno krantinės str. – just part of the infrastructure changes that await locals and visitors. After installing underground communications, the entire territory will be comprehensively organized.
From A. Juozapavičius Avenue to Kranto 11th Street Preparations are underway to renovate the 1673-meter-long gravel road from scratch. It is planned to install elevated crossings and pedestrian crossings, road signs to ensure road safety, better lighting. Heavy vehicles will not be allowed on the 5.5 lane street with two lanes of traffic.
After reconstruction, the area will continue to conserve vegetation. Even more trees and other vegetation will decorate the environment.

“The current gravel road along the pier is in bad shape, with no clear boundaries. This causes a lot of disorder. Cars are parked where they fall and traffic on such a highway can generally be dangerous for those around them. The designed quite narrow street will mainly cater to the needs of the local population, because coming from A. Juozapavičius avenue, the other end will end at 11 Kranto street, so there was no main traffic here and there won’t be. ”Said A Pakalniškis, Head of the City Management Department.
Depending on the needs of the community, there will be more vehicle space for the surrounding residents near the apartment buildings and the reconstructed street on Kranto Alley. The installation of fairly spacious parking lots near the house will also solve the problem of possible violations of the Road Traffic Rules, when cars were parked on green lawns and other unauthorized places. In addition, in the event of an incident, this place in Lower Shantes will be more quickly accessible for the transport of special services.
For cyclists and pedestrians
Along the road, the reconstruction of the existing bike lane near Las Nemunas is planned. It will be distributed up to 2.5 meters. Pedestrian routes will run along separate sidewalks. The latter will not be narrower than 1.5 m and will branch out and extend to apartment buildings. All trails will be adapted for people with special needs.
It will be very convenient to descend from the street of the Nemunas embankment to the pedestrian and bicycle lanes, ramps of one and a half meters wide with protection fences are being designed. It is planned to strengthen the slopes by installing stairs in various places.
Next to the Nemunas embankment, it is planned to install outdoor play and exercise areas, a stormwater network with water collection wells and modern LED lighting. Installing such infrastructure will significantly improve connections to the scenic riverfront.
In the recreation area near the Nemunas, cabins to change, new benches and other small architecture are projected, which will serve for the recreation of the residents and guests of the surroundings. The orderly and beautified space next to Kranto Alley will guarantee a better quality of life not only for the current but also for the future inhabitants of this district.
