Experts in architecture and urban planning carried out an analysis of the adaptation of the streets of Naujamiestis to a quiet traffic area, a survey of the residents and developed a concept for the redevelopment of these streets, which includes slower traffic, greener curbs and more attractive public spaces for pedestrians. During the public presentation of the concept, there will be an opportunity to find out what added value the application of slower traffic principles creates not on a street, but on your larger network.
According to the municipal report, the concept of quiet streets allows residents to expect safer movement not only for cars, but also for pedestrians and cyclists, creating a more lively and attractive living environment. Naugarduko Street, where solutions for slower vehicle movement and public spaces are systematically applied, has become the first positive example, attracting initiatives such as the street market or the “mobile patios”. Solutions for quiet traffic streets have already been tested in Naugardukas, Iceland, I. Šimulionis, Giedraičiai and several other streets in Vilnius. If the excess width of the traffic lanes is abandoned, allocated for street landscaping and parking, the speed of cars is usually reduced to 20-30 km / h due to these measures, which is also planned to rebuild on the planned streets of Naujamiestis. All these solutions create safer streets for pedestrians, and cyclists can simply ride here in car-sharing traffic.

“Solutions that break the dominance of car traffic, as foreign examples show, bring remodeled areas back to life: when the air becomes cleaner and the noise less, people feel more comfortable walking or spending their free time in the public spaces that appear on the street, which are just the targets that we have identified. Vilnius Sustainable Mobility Plan, “said Anton Nikitin, the city’s chief engineer.
The Vilnius City Municipality invites you not to miss another Tuesday, January 26. At 6:00 p.m., the remote presentation of the pilot project planned for the humanization of the streets of Naujamiestis is relevant not only for the residents of this part of the city: once the most appropriate solutions have been discovered, the capital will continue to apply the quiet street concept. on many unimportant streets in the city. In the first place, where there are more traffic accidents, as well as in more densely populated areas of the city. At least 10 quiet traffic zones are expected to appear throughout Vilnius in the next few years, and by 2030 most of the streets intended for access to homes or institutions will be rebuilt according to these principles. This model is used by many European cities.
