“We are concerned about the situation in Belarus and continue to monitor the exercise in the regions of NATO concern,” a senior NATO official told reporters.

He reaffirmed NATO’s position that the Alliance does not pose a threat to Belarus or its people.

“NATO does not threaten Belarus or its people with any military action,” said SW Peach.

The NATO official also reiterated Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg’s concerns about the Belarusian government’s actions against peaceful protesters.

“Secretary General Stoltenberg called on the Belarusian authorities to respect freedom of expression and the right to protest,” the NATO official said.

SW Peach will pay an official visit to Lithuania on Friday. She met with the Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Valdemars Rupšis, and also organized a dinner with the Minister of National Defense Raimundas Karoblis.

The NATO officer will visit the Seimas, where he will meet with the Speaker of Parliament, Viktoras Pranckietis, and other representatives of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, visit the NATO Energy Security Competence Center in Vilnius and listen to reports from the State Defense Major of the Lithuanian Armed Forces on the security situation in the region.

The Chairman of the NATO Military Committee is the Chief Military Advisor to the Secretary General of NATO.

UK Air Force Marshal SW Peach has chaired the committee since June 2018.
