This year, all those serving sentences in prisons received symbolic Christmas gifts: fruit, Christmas Eve, Christmas, in some offices and small personal gifts. And most importantly – a warm word and sincere attention. Due to the quarantine, the inmates have not had the opportunity to meet with family members for some time, so many were pleasantly surprised by such attention.

In the Kaunas interrogation cell, the convicts themselves baked Christmas and St cakes. All detainees and convicts will be served on Christmas Day at the facility. Special attention was paid to women serving their sentences in the Panevėžys Prison; they were delighted with Swedish prisons with Christmas gifts. chaplain and Pastor Walla Carlsson.

The convicts of the open colony of the Pravieniškės Correctional Center were welcomed with the upcoming holidays and shared not only with the director but also with the representatives of the Catholic Church – Vilnius St. The vicar of the parish of Francis of Assisi (Bernardine), Arūnas Peškaitis, the chaplain of life-sentenced prisoners, and Rumšiškės St. Priest Gintas Rumševičius, parish priest of the Archangel Michael Church.

Handmade decorations for convicts

The festive atmosphere in the prison facilities has been softening since the first days of December. The inmates delighted public libraries, children in nurseries and hospitals, and their families with their donated Christmas crafts and decorations. The Christmas atmosphere is also created in various activities organized by specialists in resocialization: a Christmas wreath contest, production of Christmas decorations, participation in other Advent projects, decoration of Christmas trees in common areas and in the residence of prisoners . According to the representatives of the Open Colony of the Pravienišk Abs Correctional Center, some prisoners even gave up prizes in the Christmas wreath contest to decorate their living spaces.

At the initiative of the Department of Prisons, the heads of correctional institutions were asked to provide the prisoners with additional food (fruits, vegetables) and vitamins during this difficult period of quarantine. Additionally, to encourage convicts for innocent behavior and advance the risk reduction of criminal behavior, increase the use of the incentive measure – an increase in the maximum amount of money a convict can buy in a correctional facility per month.

We hope that the joint efforts of prison staff and inmates themselves to create a more beautiful environment will not only create a more festive atmosphere, but will also inspire inmates to make positive changes in their lives, the Department of Prisons said in a statement.
