The captured Burmese python is 5.7 meters long and weighs 47.2 kg. To date, the largest Burmese python caught in Florida has been smaller by just 2.5 cm.

Burmese pythons, as one of the largest snake species, have powerful jaws and the ability to destroy a wide diversity of animals, posing a clear threat to the fragile Everglades ecosystem.

“On Friday night, we pulled this snake out of the water. I’ve never seen a snake of this size, my hands were shaking when we got close, “said Kevin Pavlidis, a hired python hunter.

“Every python caught can be dangerous, but that size? Mortal. One mistake and he would definitely go to the hospital. But more importantly, it is a snake that you will see once in your life. “

Catching giant snakes is a dangerous occupation. Pythons of this size in Florida kill and even eat alligators. Burmese pythons have no natural enemies in Florida, so hunting must be done by organizations that fight them.

Some people grow Burmese pythons at home as pets. They entered the city of Everglades in South Florida after escaping from their hosts or were illegally released and quickly established themselves in tropical swamps. Wetlands and wet grasslands are a great environment for large snakes to thrive. With little competition, they have become a painful problem for local ecosystems.

Hunters fighting this species have removed more than 5,000 pythons from the Everglades, but there are still around 3,000 here.
