Cargo flows are fast in Latvia

Freight transport by the railways of the neighboring country was almost halved in the first half of the year, and cargo handling in its ports by almost a third.

Data published by the Latvian Ministry of Transport and Communications show that 11,563 million tons of goods were transferred by rail in the first half of the year. 47.2% less cargo tons than in the same period last year.

International cargo transport is said to have totaled 10,925 million. t 48.7% less than in 2019. However, in the first half of the year, the national cargo flow increased 5.7% to 638,000 tons.

In the first half of the year, the traffic was 9,042 million. tons of cargo, even 53.9% less than a year ago.

During the aforementioned period, the flow of import cargo increased by 9.1% to 1,701 million. t, and the export cargo flow increased by 32.2% to 182,000 t.

2019 Latvian railways transferred a total of LTL 41,492 million. tons of cargo 15.8% less than in 2018.

In the first half of the year, 22,628 million tons were handled in the ports of neighboring countries. tons of cargo 30.1% less than in the same period last year.

Bulk cargo handling fell 43.2% to 10.51 million. t, liquid cargo handling 13.5% to 6,244 million. tons, and general cargo handling 12.1% to 5,874 million. t.

In the first half of the year, cargo handling at the port of Riga decreased by 26.7% to 11,843 million. t, in Ventspils port 41.1% to 6.8 million. t, and in the port of Liepaja 15.6% to 3,085 million. t.

899,800 tons of cargo were handled in small ports in half a year, 11.8% less than the previous year.

In 2019, 62.379 million tons were handled in the ports of Latvia. tons of cargo 5.7% less than in 2018.
