Car tax is coming – how will it be calculated if there is no CO2 data and the formulas don’t fit?

[ad_1]

As Delfi explained, Regitra, which collects the car registration tax, uses three main methods to determine how much the vehicle owner must pay.

Three main ways

The first is probably the simplest: CO2 emissions from the car are recorded on your origin or approval documents. In this case, the fee will be calculated according to the specified value.

In the latter case, if the data is not provided in the origin or approval documents, we will search for equivalent vehicles in which the CO2 value has been indicated in the documents. For example, if a Volkswagen Golf is registered with a two-liter turbodiesel imported from Germany if necessary, your documentation will not indicate the CO2 emissions of that model, Regitra specialists will discover its CO2 value after discovering the same model in their databases and for a newly registered car.

In the third case, if the first two methods do not apply, a formula will be used to calculate the vehicle’s CO2 emissions. In order to apply the formula, it is necessary to indicate the mass of the vehicle in running order, the maximum power in kilowatts and whether the gearbox is automatic or mechanical.

As a last resort, the fourth method

However, the possibility that there may be cases in which Regitra employees cannot use the three methods mentioned above cannot be ruled out: the vehicle to be registered will be rarer, unique, not all data will be provided: data will be missing about the weight or power of the car.

In this case, another measure will be taken when calculating the car registration tax.

According to the response sent to Delfi, in this case the tax calculation formula will be applied (type of mass, power and gearbox), but the data to be entered will not be for the vehicle to be registered.

In this case, Regitra employees will search for equivalent vehicles that are equivalent to the registered vehicle by type, variant or version, and their technical data will be used to calculate the median of that data.

“For example, we found in the registry three equivalent vehicles with a mass of 1,410 kg, 1,420 kg, and 1,430 kg of motorized vehicles in running order. Then the median will be calculated, in other words, the average data of 1,420 kg would be used in the formula ”, said Emilija Bardauskienė, specialist in the communication department of Regitra.

It will not appear in the documents.

Despite the fact that in Lithuania the CO2 value will be used to calculate the car registration tax, this data will not always appear on the newly issued registration documents.

As Delfi has explained to Regitra specialists, only if the carbon dioxide values are indicated in the origin or approval documents, these data will appear on the registration certificate. Otherwise, column V.7, which indicates how much CO2 the car emits, will remain blank and the available data will only be used for the tax calculation.

According to Regitra, in 2019. for the first time in Lithuania about 220 thousand. passenger cars, of which about 170 thousand. CO2 data were known from the documents.

Another 225 thousand. passenger cars were re-registered in Lithuania last year; Vehicle managers changed. Of these, around 98 thousand. CO2 was known from the documents.
