Officials from the Criminal Customs Service (CCS) report that they have launched a pre-trial investigation into the large-scale cigarette smuggling stopped in Kybartai.
February 23, around 2 pm In the evening, a Russian national arriving at the Kybartai roadside post in a Daf cargo truck declared that he intended to transport a cargo of frozen fish in transit through Lithuania to Russia: 23.6 tonnes of Baltic herring. However, after officials from the Kaunas Territorial Customs inspected the machine’s X-ray control system, it became clear that only half of the declared cargo was actually on the semi-trailer – about 10 tons of frozen fish. The rest was occupied by cigarette smuggling: fish and smokers were piling up, mixed with one row of herring boxes and the other row made up of cigarette boxes.
A total of 843 boxes (421,500 packs) of five types of cigarettes were found: Dove Compact Platinum, Dove Superslims Platinum, Dove Gold Compact and Rominta. The total value of these smokers, including taxes, is approximately 1.5 million. euros.
Cigarettes were stopped and a pre-trial smuggling investigation was launched at the Kaunas branch of the MKT, led by the Kaunas Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
The tractor driver, who admitted to smuggling, was taken into custody.
This is one of the largest cigarette smuggling arrests this year at Lithuanian Customs, whose officials have already detained roughly 1.7 million people before the end of the second month of the year. smuggling of parcels (its value with taxes included is about 6 million euros).
