“To date, we do not have a clear priority for people with disabilities, and we hope that in the near future the majority of people with disabilities will be vaccinated through the priority of chronic diseases”, Irena Segalovičienė, social policy advisor from the president, he told News Radio.
She believes that people with disabilities should form a separate priority group.
“It just came to our knowledge then. Because the statistics show and research by foreign scientists shows that the risk of death is actually higher also in the group of people with disabilities,” said the adviser.
According to I. Segalovičienė, among other things, sustainable solutions are necessary by including people with disabilities to work in the open labor market on an equal footing with others. According to her, although the law provides for additional measures to support employment, the financing “does not always follow the planned measures.”
“What is really needed here is a review of active labor market measures, which are aimed at people with disabilities, to be effective, of high quality (…) This requires very adequate but highly targeted funding. The President encourages the Government to undertake these changes, and we hope that these changes will be made in the near future, ”said I. Segalovičienė.
The president holds a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the situation of people with disabilities. The Head of State will meet remotely with the Ombudsman for Equal Opportunities Biruta Sabatauskaitė and the members of the Commission for the Monitoring of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
According to the Presidency, the meeting will focus on the rights and well-being of people with disabilities, the impact of measures to curb the COVID-19 pandemic on the situation of these people.
The progress of the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Lithuania will also be discussed.
