Browse the Nausėda statement in Brussels: there is much more to the speech

Audronius Ažubalis, a member of Seimas, says in an interview with Delfi TV that this letter is a provocative action.

First of all, I do not think that the letter format proposal is specific to the European Council. I would say that it is a provocative attempt to start a debate at all costs, because the initiators of the letter were well aware that some states would not accept such a letter.

As a general rule, all issues are agreed upon in the Council, discussed beforehand, it is already known that no one will block the issue, and then it is put on the agenda, although this statement is not a normative act, but a policy. step, no matter how we evaluate it.

Eugenijus Gentvilas, the eldest of the Liberal Group, says that this letter expresses a more modern approach, therefore it is regrettable that Lithuania found itself in such positions along with Poland, Bulgaria and Romania.

“I heard Azubalis comment here, so I could agree. There is only a police testimony, not some normative act, such a letter, and clearly the EU heads of state have different opinions. I am really a little disappointed in that of the new bloc in Eastern Europe, the new Member States have only been signed by the leaders of Estonia, Latvia, other Eastern European countries have not signed, it can be understood that they support such Hungarian actions. It is also disappointing that the leader Lithuanian did not join the leaders of Latvia and Estonia. The Lithuanian leader remained in positions such as Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. It seems to me that this letter expresses a more modern approach and has not received the signature of our boss of State ”, says E. Gentvilas.

Gentville: The president’s speech sounded a lot more

When asked how to evaluate the president’s explanation that “letters do not solve problems,” the politician finds it difficult to see the president’s own position. According to him, the president did not provide clarity.

“I often hear such speeches, for example, when the Public Limited Companies Law was drafted, the Civil Code was changed at the beginning and the opponents said: no, if the Civil Code changes, then it is not appropriate to adopt a separate law, then perhaps But nothing has changed since then. It is also said here that it is not the letters that solve the problems, but then the solution must be proposed. <...> Does the president mean that tougher positions should be taken immediately, probably even? It may be enough to express your opinion at first and only then start talking about tougher positions. Another question is whether the president is in favor of tougher positions.

Again, it is unlikely because it says that we will adopt our legislation in the fall without any outside consultation. <..> In other words, there is much more to the president’s speech that the opinion of the EU heads of state is not important, but that they can demonstrate their sovereignty without any intervention from the country ”, says E. Gentvilas.

President Gitan Nauseda, who is visiting Brussels, has shut down Hungary, which has received harsh criticism from other European Union (EU) leaders for a controversial law that prohibits minors from accessing any material on the LGBTQ issue.

Mr Nausėda stated that some colleagues from the EU had commented on the legislation adopted in Hungary without being familiar with the text of the law.

The head of state asked not to assume the role of judge without delving into “what Hungary is trying to do.”

“Today, the discussion sometimes took place a little away from the object and, in fact, sometimes colleagues were not even very familiar with the texts of the law and tried to comment. I think that’s not right, “G. Nausėda told reporters after the European Council meeting that ended on Friday morning.

“We should first assess what Hungary is trying to do, what it has done and only then take on the role of that so-called judge.” It was really too early to do that today, “he added.

EU leaders meeting in Brussels on Thursday criticized Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban for saying the law was seen as homophobic and contrary to community values.

Probably the harshest criticism at the start of the meeting came from Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who said that “Hungary no longer has a place in the EU.”

Orban has defended himself against criticism, saying that EU leaders have misunderstood the new legislation. According to the Hungarian Prime Minister, the law is not directed against sexual minorities.

“The question is how the child learns about his sexuality … and the decisions involved are a matter for the parents alone,” Orban said.

Before the European Council, 17 EU leaders signed a letter condemning “threats to fundamental rights, in particular the principle of non-discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation”.

Mr. Nausėda refused to sign the letter, saying that he was convinced that “problems were not solved with letters”.

Earlier this week, many of the same countries expressed “serious concerns” about the law passed in Hungary in a joint letter. Lithuania signed this letter, which was made by Deputy Foreign Minister Arnoldas Pranckevičius.
