If there are reasons to suspect that the animals have died, were crippled due to cruel treatment, as well as if signs of other crimes are detected, the Prosecutor’s Office will initiate the corresponding pre-trial investigations.

As previously reported, following the detection of the remains of a possibly burned animal, a pre-trial investigation was launched at the Kretinga District Police Station under article 310 of the Penal Code, headed by the Regional Prosecutor’s Office from Klaipėda.

The authorities are investigating the circumstances in which a dog bone and a tuft of fur appeared in a fireplace found in the village of Padvariai, Kretinga district. It is also investigated if the sows found in a nearby plastic bag are dogs and how they appeared there. The study seeks to determine if this is not a consequence of cruelty to animals.

In recent years, about 70 pre-trial investigations have been initiated each year for animal cruelty, and 58 began this year.

Article 310 of the Penal Code. 1 d. It indicates that whoever has cruelly treated an animal has tortured it, resulting in the death or mutilation of the animal, is punished with public works or a fine, or arrest, or imprisonment of up to one year.
