On Thursday, officers from the Varėna border team of the Varėna State Border Guard Service (SBGS), A. The Barauskas border guard in Katra village of Varėna district noticed suspicious people with carriers.
Near this forested area, right next to the border with Belarus, there is a demarcated state border protection zone (VSAZ). Access requires a special SBGS permit. This place is also located in the Čepkeliai State Nature Reserve, which requires permission from the Reserve Directorate.
Border guards detained the carriers. The 31-year-old Rokiškis residents and the 32-year-old residents of the Alytus district carried four bundles tied together and secured with handmade suspenders. They contained 2,000 packs of NZ Gold cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps.
Both SSIA violators did not have mandatory border guard permits. Smugglers also did not have permission from the Čepkeliai Reserve Authority to enter this protected area.
Due to the illegal transport of products subject to excise duties in violation of the established procedure, the agents of the firewall of A. Barauskas initiated an administrative process. Carriers receive a fine of between 5,200 and 6,000 euros for this offense.
Both smugglers should also be held administratively responsible for violations of the laws that regulate the border legal regime, that is, unauthorized access to the SSIA. Such an offense carries a warning or a fine of 40 to 90 euros.
The material of this event was delivered by the border guards of A. Barauskas to the management of the reserve Čepkeliai, who will decide how to punish the two men in the reserve without permits.
Following interrogations, SBGS officials released the detainees. Residents of the district of Alytus and Rokiškis should go to court to hear their cases.
The cigarettes are stored at the A. Barauskas border barrier.
This week was the second case in the Čepkeliai reserve, when border guards caught smugglers there. On Wednesday, the 20- and 34-year-old residents of the Šalčininkai district were captured here by A. Barauskas firewall officers. They also transported 2,000. pack of cigarettes “Fest” with Belarusian stamps.
