Last year, border guards with the SBGS Immunity Board launched a pre-trial investigation into smuggling from Belarus. During the process, three officers from the Varėna border team (one born in 1974, two in 1977) were detained in Druskininkai and Lazdijai on Tuesday.

They are suspected of organizing smuggling and abusing the service. The three detainees were taken into custody on Tuesday.

Border guards from the SBGS anti-corruption unit, i.e. the Immunity Board, also detained a local resident in Druskininkai on the same day (born 1956). He is suspected of complicity in smuggling. The man was also taken into custody.

SBGS has also started an official inspection. In addition to criminal responsibility, detained officials face the most severe penalty provided in the Internal Staff Regulations: dismissal for demotion of an official.

The ongoing investigation is controlled by the Prosecutor of the Organized Crime and Corruption Investigation Division of the Vilnius Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
