V. Blinkevičiūtė MEP declared on Friday that she was determined to participate in the LSDP presidential elections this spring.
According to the politician, if she won the elections, she would not be in a hurry to resign her mandate as an MEP.
“I am convinced that by working responsibly, sacrificing ourselves and using teleworking, everything can really be reconciled. I really don’t want to cheat on anything and I will really try to reconcile at this stage, and in the future it will be seen, ”the politician told Elta on Friday.
According to her, she goes to the election of the party president with the news that you have to trust only the LSDP, which did not catch up in the last Seimas elections.
“Our Social Democratic Party is a strong party. All we need is that we create on our own. My main message is that we Social Democrats are a modern European left party that the Lithuanian people need,” said the politician.
The MEP pointed out that, in her opinion, the LSDP is the only left-wing force in Lithuania that meets European “standards”, as no other party calling for the left speaks progressively on human rights issues.
“With the exception of the LSDP, I don’t really see any other modern, progressive, European left force in Lithuania,” said V. Blinkevičiūtė.
“It is difficult for me to realize that there are more left parties in Lithuania. Maybe I don’t understand something … Maybe when we talk about social and economic issues, maybe I will discover something that someone tried to take certain ideas from the Social Democrats in this In the field of human rights, however, this is certainly not the center-left party, “he said.
How the LSDP should work in opposition is a matter of discussion
V. Blinkevičiūtė was very skeptical about the idea expressed by the leader of the “social workers” Gediminas Kirkilas that after 2020. the right has formed the power in Lithuania, the center-left parties should unite. As G. Kirkilas told Eltai in January, for the left to re-form power in Lithuania, not only the “social workers” must return to the LSDP, but also the “peasants” must join the unified formation.
“I think Gediminas Kirkilas provoked me here anyway and actually spoke quite a bit. Te Gediminas forgives me, but I really don’t think it is and I don’t really need it at all. I don’t know why he had such a utopian idea and no one needs it, “said V. Blinkevičiūtė.
The politician also spoke cautiously about closer cooperation between opposition forces in the Seimas. Ramūnas Karbauskis, the leader of the Peasants, has repeatedly mentioned that he is awaiting the election of the president of the LSDP, after which it would be possible to more clearly structure the failed cooperation of the opposition forces of the Seimas. According to V. Blinkevičiūtė, what the unity of the opposition forces should look like is a subject that requires discussion.
“It just came to our attention then. There is a lot to discuss. We can see both the differences and the similarities where we can look for solutions,” he said.
After the unsuccessful Seimas elections of the Social Democrats, in case of discontent among party members, starting in 2017. Gintautas Paluckas, director of the LSDP, resigned as president. When he resigned from the party post, he proposed to appoint V. Blinkevičiūtė as temporary head of the LSDP. However, the LSDP council has decided that the mayor of Jonava, Mindaugas Sinkevičius, will temporarily lead the party.
He has publicly declared that he will not seek to lead the Social Democrats and that he will not run in the party’s spring elections.
At the time, MEP Juozas Olekas announced in January that he would seek to become the new leader of the LSDP.
Liutauras Gudžinskas, associate professor at the Institute of International Relations and Political Sciences (VU TSPMI) of Vilnius University also intends to seek the post of party chairman.
The first round of the LSDP presidential elections will take place April 22-25 and is elected for a period of 2 years.
LSDP divisions will be able to nominate candidates for the party presidency until March 28. There are a total of 60 party divisions.
