The opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin, B. Nemtsov, was shot and killed on February 27, 2015 on the Moscow River Bridge near the Kremlin.

“Remembering Nemtsov, we reaffirm our firm commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms,” Blinken said in a statement. “We remain deeply concerned about the growing intolerance of the Russian government towards all forms of independent expression.”

Several thousand Russians, along with Western diplomats, gathered in Moscow to mark the anniversary and lay flowers at the site of B. Nemtsov’s murder.

In July 2017, former Chechen security official Zaur Dadajev was sentenced to 20 years in prison for being the author of the murder of B. Nemtsov. Four more men were found guilty of their role in the murder.

However, Nemtsov’s family and comrades believe that the real perpetrators of the murder have not yet been punished. Many point to the Moscow-backed Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov and the Kremlin itself.

Blinken called Nemtsov a man who “dedicated his life to building a free and democratic Russia.”

“Those who vigorously defend their freedoms and democracy in Russia continue to be the target of attacks and assassinations,” he said. – The Russian people deserve better [padėties]. “
