The remains of Mykolas Biržiška, signatory to the February 16 Act, and his family members transported from the United States of America were solemnly buried in the Vilnius Racing Cemetery in 2018. July 11 In addition to M.Biržiška, his wife Bronislava and two brothers Vaclovas and Viktoras put their eternal rest here.

Composition for the whole tomb

Last year, before All Souls’ Day, when people ready to visit the graves of their loved ones and celebrities flocked to the cemetery, we could say that deserving members of the Lithuanian Biržiškės family were buried and forgotten in the cemetery of Rasai, but this year the situation is the opposite.

Four graves along the main path of the Rasai Cemetery, which leads to the chapel, where the leaders and participants of the 1863-1864 uprising rest, and the grave of Jonas Basanavičius, are now marked by the composition of the tombstone “The Road “. Its author is the sculptor Mindaugas Junčys, who won the commemorative tomb contest announced in summer.

The author’s explanatory note, which he submitted while participating in the contest, reads: “Each person has a separate path that starts from the ground with a fairly rough stone. The beginning is free enough, it continues in a dynamic silhouette, passes through the “flowering” zone, climbs to the top, acquires a clearer and more concrete form. The surface of the stone becomes polished: clear and stable.

The beginning is from earth and the end ascends to heaven. At the beginning of the road, more ambiguity and freedom, as well as more dynamism and drive. And towards the end of the road, as if everything became clearer, more stable, this is reflected in the emerging straight lines, more processed stone.

According to the author, the grave should be managed according to general principles, but at the same time each grave is different: “Different heights and widths of tombstones, different angle of inclination of the tile, flower garden are also different. I would suggest distinguishing other plants, for example: heather of different shades. It gives each person individuality. “

Starting from the earth and the end rising to the sky.

And indeed, the different colored heather planted on the graves range from white to different shades of pink and purple.

The value of the project is 48 thousand. It is applied at the expense of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania.

I had to negotiate with the Race Cemetery

According to the representatives of the National Museum of Lithuania, who supervised the project, the conditions of the contest indicated that the author must take into account the context, that is, the whole of the tomb and the harmony with the historical space of the Rasų cemetery, use materials durable. , the materials, colors, textures used.

“The conditions also established that the grave of M.Biržiška, signer of the Law of February 16, must be marked with the sign of the signer. Even before the start of the cemetery management, the winning project was presented to the descendants of the Biržiškės family, who supported the idea. It is planned to dedicate the monument in the summer of next year, when relatives living in the United States can come to Lithuania, ”says LNM.

The signing signs mark the graves of all the signers of the Law of February 16.
