“As we are implementing many residential improvement projects in Birštonas, including road reconstruction, we decided to look at the future potential immediately. Over the next decade, one of the EU’s top priorities will be environmental protection and environmental solutions. green economy. Therefore, after evaluating the payback of solar-powered luminaires and zero damage to nature, we immediately started work on a section of more than a kilometer of road, “says Egidijus Dargis, Deputy Director of the Department of Strategic Planning and Investments of the municipality of Birštonas.

According to him, the lighting reminiscent of futuristic flowers immediately attracted the interest of the locals. Although many residents are quite conservative and opinions differ, many still support the application of recurring energy elements in the city.

“We have already installed benches in the infrastructure with the possibility of charging smart devices and inflating bicycle tires, as well as charging stations for electric cars. And public lighting, which contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, is a further step towards sustainability, ”said the Birštonas representative.

Elmantas Mickevičius, head of BIPA’s electronics and innovation department, who contributed to the lighting of the Nemajūnai road, also reveals the growing need for green solutions in infrastructure.

“There are already parks in Lithuania where you can see at least some solar-powered luminaires. There is also a growing interest in bus stops that use renewable energy sources and illuminated by an LED lighting system. Solar lighting solves a particularly big problem in areas where obtaining constant energy is difficult or impossible ”, reveals the author of the luminaires.

According to him, solar-powered lighting systems can run for up to ten hours or more a day. And without additional solar charging, the power lasts up to four days. Like traditional luminaires, they can be controlled remotely.

E. Mickevičius reveals that the futuristic flower design was created completely by accident, only when all the elements were already placed in the lamps. “We first implemented the technical solutions and only then did we see that they needed a round design. In addition, the architect of the city of Birštonas asked to maintain a unified image of the city, avoiding the angled parts. This is how we call these luminaires futuristic flowers, ”says an electronics and innovation specialist about luminaires that blend naturally into the natural landscape.

Green solutions in Birštonas are currently gaining momentum. In the near future, fifty more innovative luminaires will be installed near the main Vilnius-Marijampolė road towards the city of Prienai. And in the future it is planned to continue the Nemajūnai pedestrian path even to Alytus.
