As the Interior Ministry announced on Monday, EU legislation in the areas of border protection, migration and asylum should allow Lithuania and other EU member states to respond effectively to the management of illegal migration flows during the hybrid warfare.

“The regime in neighboring Belarus is using migrants as a tool to achieve its political goals. It is an organized activity aimed at harm, so the response of the European Union must be decisive, and the legislation of the European Union must respond to the new reality and clearly regulate what actions the Member States of the European Union can and should take to prevent abuses by third countries. ”cited by A. Bilotaitė.

“This issue needs to be discussed at the highest level, so I ask the president to raise it also in the European Council, to protect the interests of both our country and the European Union as a whole,” he said.

According to the Minister, the need to change and improve legal acts was demonstrated by Lithuania’s experience with the phenomenon of deliberately encouraged illegal migration, which is only one element of hybrid aggression.

According to A. Bilotaitė, by adopting amendments to legal acts at the national level, they not only helped to stabilize the situation, slow down the migratory flow, but also ensured compliance with international obligations by creating asylum applications at border control points. or transit. areas, as well as diplomatic missions or consular offices of Lithuania.

The Minister intends to raise the question of the adequacy of EU legislation governing the management of migration and asylum systems in the event of a hybrid war during a remote meeting of EU Interior Ministers on Wednesday.

This year, 4,122 immigrants illegally crossed the border between Lithuania and Belarus. After stabilizing the situation in Lithuania and slowing down the flow of people crossing the state border illegally, the number of illegal immigrants has increased significantly in Latvia, where an emergency situation has been declared, as well as in Poland.
