Biden, who is seeking the US presidency, chose Senator Kamal Harris as his campaign partner.

“I am honored to announce that I have chosen @KamalaHarris, a fearless fighter for the common man and one of the greatest civil servants, as my campaign partner,” Biden, 77, wrote in his Twitter post.

Harris made history as the first black man to be elected vice presidential candidate by any major party in the United States. The move clearly demonstrates Biden’s recognition of the role of black voters in his efforts to defeat the country’s current leader, Republican Donald Trump, in the November election.

K. Harris, 55, who served as a senator for the first term, was a rival to Biden during the Democratic primary campaign. She is also a leading figure in her party and became one of the main contenders to become a partner in the campaign when she gave up her ambitions to become the host of the White House.

Biden’s team said the two Democrats would speak Wednesday in Wilmington, Delaware, to launch a campaign to defeat Trump.
