Biden’s promise on Friday was made to thousands of Americans and others seeking to leave without being able to pass through the crowds surrounding the airport, Taliban checkpoints and, at times, the American bureaucracy.
“We will take them home,” Biden promised the Americans still in Afghanistan after the Taliban took control of Kabul and the country a few days ago after two decades of war.
The president’s comments, released from the White House, sought to create an image of purpose and stability by the end of the week, when images from Afghanistan, particularly the Kabul airport, were more likely to give the impression of chaos.
His promise to find a way to evacuate allied Afghans could mean a significant extension of Washington’s commitments, with tens of thousands of interpreters and other workers and their close relatives trying to leave the country.
For the Afghans who helped the United States during the war, “we are as committed as we are to American citizens,” Biden said.
