“On February 20, the first power unit of the nuclear power plant will be shut down as scheduled for testing and routine work under the industrial use pilot phase program,” the report read.

The first reactor of the Astrava nuclear power plant was put into operation on August 20 last year, its pilot phase of industrial operation began on December 22 and became fully operational on January 12.

In November-December, the first power unit of the power plant was shut down several times and once due to a serious accident during hydraulic tests: the tank of the emergency cooling system was severely damaged.

On January 16, the first reactor was disconnected from the Belarusian power system due to the activation of the generator protection system. It was turned on again on January 21.

The Belarusian Ministry of Energy has previously announced that the first power unit of the Astrava nuclear power plant is scheduled to go into industrial operation in the first quarter of this year, and that the second reactor will come into operation in the first half of 2022. .

The first nuclear power plant in Belarus to be built near the Lithuanian state will have two reactors from the Russian VVER project of equal power, almost 1.2 gigawatts each.

The project is financed by a loan from the Russian government. The power plant is being built by Rosatom Corporation.

Lithuania claims that the Astrava nuclear power plant was built near the border without meeting environmental and safety requirements. Minsk rejects these accusations.
