Dozens of people gathered in front of the courtroom to express their support for M. Kalesnikava. Among them were ambassadors from some EU countries. The 38-year-old opponent attended the court hearing through a video call. She kept pointing at the camera with a hand-shaped heart as a symbol of her protest.
Kalesnikava is one of the most important leaders of the opposition against President Aliaksandr Lukashenko. He also belongs to the Presidium of the Coordinating Council for the Pacific Change of Government.
Two weeks ago, Mr. Kalesnikava was kidnapped and finally found in a detention center. She faces up to five years in prison for threatening national security. Kalesnikava herself has complained to the militia and the KGB about threats to kill her.
Aliasxandr, the father of M. Kalesnikava, was also in the courtroom. He thanked the support from abroad.
