“A criminal case is being investigated … against participants of the BYPOL initiative regarding the organization of terrorist acts perpetrated by a Maleičuk citizen on March 25, 2021 in Barysaw and Minsk,” the report reads.
“It has been established that S. Cichanouskaja, P. Latuška and 15 other citizens of the Republic of Belarus abroad have contributed to the illegal activities of this unregistered organization,” the KGB said.
The committee noted that an international search had been launched for all those implicated in the case of an “organized terrorist act”.
Documents were prepared on the extradition of S. Cichanouskaya and P. Latška from Lithuania and Poland, respectively, added KGB representatives.
Belarus has been rocked for several months by massive protests against the results of the presidential elections on August 9, announced by Aliaksandr Lukashenko, who has been in charge of the country since 1994.
Her opponents say the elections were rigged and that the real winner is political rookie Sviatlana Cichanouskaya, who ran in place of her imprisoned husband.
Belarusian security forces have cracked down on protesters, detained them and forced opposition leaders to flee the country.
The protesters are demanding the resignation of Lukashenko, the release of political prisoners and new elections.
But the protest movement was gradually repressed, with mass arrests. Hundreds of them allege that the detainees were tortured.
The Telegram platform NEXTA, which mobilized the protesters and coordinated their actions, called last week for a “second wave of protests.”
At the time, Cichanouskaya’s spokeswoman told the Interfax news agency that her inclusion on the “terror list” would in no way affect the negotiations that the opposition was conducting through various channels.
“Just in the sense that everyone understands that pressure [Minskui] the process of starting negotiations should be accelerated as much as possible, ”said the representatives.
Earlier, Cichanouskaya suggested that Belarusians hold a “national vote” and said he would encourage international partners to take action. According to the opposition leader, this vote should pave the way for “negotiations with representatives of the regime who are willing to think ahead and make mature decisions, instead of dragging the crisis to total catastrophe.”
According to the opposition, the most likely platform for negotiations with the Belarusian government could be the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
