– How did you decide that it was necessary to renovate the kitchen?
– When we moved into the house, we also inherited the kitchen, which was used by various hosts before us, and she counted it for 15 years. The design and functionality no longer met our needs, storage space was lacking, and all the furniture and cabinets took up a lot of space.
Another nuance is that next to the kitchen that connects with the living room, we wanted to make a niche for the sleeping area. The houses are small, so we wanted to use the area wisely, so the kitchen area was reduced and the chosen island separated the two spaces.

I chose neutral colors because the kitchen is in a common space with the living room, so I wanted everything to match well with the furniture and colors that were already in place.
– What helped to create the more functionality, the more the kitchen was reduced?
– My goal was to make as many drawers as possible, because they are more comfortable to use than cabinets, so the chosen island was very suitable, it had many drawers. The drawers are more comfortable because when we open them, we will see everything. The cabinets are quite wide, but it is not convenient to store items or food in them, they are hidden one behind the other and left forgotten and unused.

The dishwasher was also very important as we don’t like to wash dishes. I also wanted to avoid hanging cabinets so they wouldn’t obscure the space. I was not attracted to the idea of making ceiling-high cabinets, which is now quite popular, so we opted for open shelves. The ceiling is high, 3.5 m high, so the cabinets would not be used, because to get to what is on the highest shelves you would need a ladder, which is an additional element in the house.
Because the kitchen is small, we also renounce elements that were duplicated, that is, they performed the same function. I think each of us has a few pasta strainers, salad dryers, or dusting plates in cupboards. In a small kitchen, it is very important not to overload unnecessary things.
– Did you do everything yourself?
– Yes, and while choosing the best kitchen design, I went through many examples to find out what would work best for our family. There was a wide variety of options, but I am very satisfied with this.
The beginning was not easy, I thought for a long time what to do. Finally, looking at Pinterest, I discovered a very similarly designed room with a kitchen; that’s when the moment of enlightenment came. After that, everything happened very quickly: we bought a kitchen set that suited our spaces, and the latest hit was the recent arrival of kitchen shelves.
The niche we made now is for sleeping, and at first we even planned to make a special wardrobe-bed. However, I have seen that such large and massive furniture does not look good in our homes and makes the spaces very heavy, so I am glad I did not implement this solution.
Now everything in the kitchen is as I planned and dreamed it, and most importantly, all things have their place. The order is now much more, although the kitchen is smaller. We have left the same tiles that have existed for fifteen years because their design and color fit me, and it is more sustainable to leave them than to tear down and stick new ones.
– What advice would you give to other people who are renovating or have small kitchens?
– First of all, I would recommend looking for matches online where you can find plenty of inspiration, as well as giving up excess items that usually just take up space. Probably none have twice as many plates for the same purpose as we need, so they can be gifted or given to those who need them most.
