The council members, who met in the Klaipėda city municipality on Thursday, also discussed the new rules on the beaches.
They have been passionate about discussing issues in committees in the past. Most of the disagreements were during the hours of visiting the beaches. According to the rules, tourists can visit the beaches from 9 a.m. at 9 p.m.
Councilmen Alina Velykienė and Vaida Raugelė wondered if it is not possible to visit the beaches according to the rules during the summer, when it gets dark early and late. “The question arises: will I be able to come see the sunset, because according to those rules it would turn out that I cannot”, A. Velykienė was angry.
V.Raugele also had concerns about whether Klaipeda residents and guests who enjoy morning swimming are at risk of fines.
Marius Poimanskis, who submitted the question to the council, stated that the criterion of reasonableness must be met. The concept has been specified by the legal acts of the Ministry of the Interior, according to which the regulations for the management of bodies of water, ice, and municipalities must be adapted to local characteristics. “Theoretically, the examples you provide can be fined. However, I want to say that there have been so many hours of visits before, “said the official.
According to him, the “visiting hours” of the beaches are necessary to determine the work hours of the rescuers. At that time, vacationers bathing in the sea are said to be supervised by lifeguards.
However, council members said that “beach hours” are a much broader concept than the lifeguards’ work and should be separate.
Criticism has also stalled during the rescuers’ work season. According to board member Nina Puteikienė, it should start earlier and end later, given the increasingly hot weather. “After all, people bathe in the sea in mid-October, why is climate change not taken into account?” The politician was outraged.
The Council decided to postpone the review of these rules to the next meeting and revise the wording.
Some politicians have criticized the decision that the rules themselves are only a formality, and have therefore received too much attention.
“We look ridiculous: the season is already half over and we are approving the rules,” Rimantas Taraškevičius quipped.
