Be very careful when driving at dusk or dawn: in autumn, animals often jump right under the wheels.

A 3-year-old moose was trapped in a drainage ditch in an area near Lieponiai village, Trakai district. This image was seen and captured in a completely unexpected way by nature lovers who came to photograph autumn nature. The moose is so overwhelmed that it breathes underwater with its nose ajar. It is emitted by rising water bubbles. The mighty forest is more than five feet stuck in mud, with only about 8 inches of water on the surface.

“Only those horns stick out of that ditch, the swamps. We couldn’t believe what we saw because moose usually have no trouble getting over such a ditch. We thought they were hallucinations,” says photographer Ričardas Anusauskas.

However, when people realized that the animal could not get out on its own, they called the fire brigade to the rescue. To avoid injuring the animal, pull the fire truck by car. After a couple of hours, 6 men still managed to pull the moose out of the well by hand. Elk rescuers say he refused to thank him multiple times while on the run.

“That moose, being in such a state of stress, thanked the life saved and ran silently in the middle of the fields towards such a small forest, lay down to rest, regained his strength,” says R. Anusauskas.

And the performance of 12 female deer, male deer and 5-6 competitors was captured by nature photographer Marius Čepulis, who went to observe the start of the deer rut in autumn. Marius Čepulis says that the roar of the roaring deer can be heard even from a few kilometers away. Moose and bison are also currently breeding.

“They have their favorite places to spawn, where the males gather and already show there who has something bigger, better, prettier and then the females go after them. For the animals, this is an annual wedding. We can every day, and they have the opportunity once a year, and they use it, ”he says.

And to take advantage of that opportunity, male deer compete for females and fight with tight horns. It is true that in animal life, as in human life, there are various dramas.

“The younger ones try to seduce, the older ones don’t. Generally, females choose the best because they know the best genes. Therefore, their children will be the strongest and so on. Sometimes it allows some male, older male, that the females are taken outside, sprayed, detached, protected and then returned to the forest. Because they are the most beautiful, the oldest are the most and the most careful, “says M. Čepulis.

Warns against weaning animals

People must also be especially careful. With the appearance of the heat of deer, elk and bison in September and the movement of animals to the spawning grounds, they can also increase on the roads. In the 7 months of this year, there have been more than 2,600 car accidents in wildlife, 94 more than last year. Although there were no deaths last year or this year, unlike in 2019, when a car collided with an animal, two people were killed, but there are also victims this year.

“Of those incidents, 20 are incidents in which 27 people were affected. In other words, people were injured precisely by collisions with animals, ”says Vytautas Grašys, head of the traffic police.

Insurers are also noticing that the estrus of some wild animals started in September. According to the nation’s largest insurance company, there are typically 60-80 cases of collisions with animals each month, but in September-October there are 100 and more. This year, the Lietuvos Draudimas company recorded almost 900 car and animal collisions and paid them more than 1.3 million LTL. euros.

“On average, this is about 2,000 thousand euros. It depends largely on the animal that is found. The most expensive damage is in the case of a moose, which already costs around 2,800. The most common damage is to the face of deer, ”says Rolanda Lipnevičiūtė, representative of Lietuvos Draudimas.

People, according to insurers, often see even more trouble when they see an animal that has run away on the road and they don’t want to hurt it, so sometimes it is better to deal with that animal.

“There are often accidents where the driver tries to avoid a collision, especially if it is a smaller animal, a rabbit, a fox, something and, in an attempt to avoid a collision, has an even bigger accident. Leave the lane opposite the traffic, leave the road, ”adds R. Lipnevičiutė.

Most collisions with animals occur on the main roads in the Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipeda districts.

According to the police, drivers mistakenly believe that a fence can protect them from colliding with beasts, although it is better to choose a safe speed and be vigilant, especially at dusk and dawn, when there are a large number of animals running on the roads. .
