That would be a great strategic victory against the Armenian separatists in the region.

“I am very proud and happy to inform you that the city of Šuša has been liberated,” Aliyev said on television.

Armenia said on Saturday that a “fierce battle” with Azerbaijani forces took place at night near the city of Shushah, a major fortress in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

However, Armenia did not confirm Azerbaijan’s statement on the occupation of the city and said that the fight for Shushan continued.

“The battles in Šuša continue, wait and believe in our army,” wrote Artsrun Ovhanisian, representative of the Armenian Ministry of Defense, on Twitter.

The fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan over this mountainous province has lasted for more than a month, killing more than a thousand people, including civilians, but it is estimated that the actual number of victims could be much higher.

Fierce fighting has been going on in the Šuša district for several days. Situated on a hill, this city is 15 km from Nagorno-Karabakh’s main city, Stepanakert, on a road connecting the capital of an unrecognized republic with the territory of the Armenian-backed separatists.
