A list of the names of the detained protesters is posted on the centre’s website and is constantly updated, and 750 detainees are now listed.

Viasna recorded arrests in the capital Minsk, as well as in other major cities in the country, such as Gomel, Svetlogorsk, Novgorod, Bobruisk, Grodno, Pinsk, Brest, Novopolotsk, Mogilev, Osipovichy, Žlovin, Molodechno.

This Sunday’s protests have reportedly drawn the fewest people in the past three months, but the number of detainees is likely to be the highest.

Belarus has been holding massive protests for more than three months over the August 9 presidential elections, which were officially announced by Aliaksandr Lukashenko, who has ruled the country since 1994. The opposition and Western democracies view these elections as rigged.

The protesters are demanding the resignation of Lukashenko, the release of political prisoners and new elections.
