This week, on the occasion of Medical Workers Day, Diana Nausėdienė responded to the NKC’s request to donate blood. A month ago, he launched an initiative to create a potential donor bank so that blood centers could invite people to donate blood as needed: a large pool of blood cannot accumulate due to the limited shelf life of components blood.
“For doctors to save the health and lives of each of us, they need resources. There is a shortage of blood reserves today. Therefore, I want to give a personal example and urge: I trust the National Blood Center and I’m not afraid to donate blood. Don’t be afraid either, “said the first lady who came to the NCC to donate blood.
Currently, there is a great shortage of blood, as the number of donors has decreased dramatically during the quarantine, and although the needs of all Lithuanian medical institutions are being met so far, a sudden jump in blood demand is expected after the resumption of routine operations.
“We have a minimum reserve right now. Thanks to Diana Nausėdienė for your help. With her personal example, she mobilizes people and promotes blood donation. Thanks to everyone who connects to the database of potential blood donors ”Says Daumantas Gutauskas, director of NKC.
To prepare for the surge in demand, some NKC units will also be working over the long weekend. On Friday, May 1, the NKC unit of PC CUP (Upės St. 9, Vilnius) will be open: Donors are welcome here from 11 a.m. at 7 p.m. On Saturday, May 2, people are invited to donate blood not only to PC CUP, but also to Kaunas, Vytauto Ave. 13, 11-16 p.m. and Panevėžys, Nemuno str. 75, 8-19 p.m. The units of the National Blood Center will be closed on Sunday.
It is true that blood quarantine was not completely stopped during quarantine. Active people donated blood to the NKC unit at PC CUP, where more than a thousand people came to donate blood from the beginning of the quarantine. Unity here has been extremely important to the blood center in recent weeks.
“We are proud that the branch of the National Blood Center is located on the premises of our supermarket. We strongly support the idea of donation and encourage you to help each other when you need it most, and this help is important on a daily basis in this moment. We ensure a safe environment for all visitors to the shopping center: we responsibly disinfect all contact areas and surfaces every 2 hours. Therefore, blood donors can also feel safe in our facilities, “said Ona Nevinskienė, CEO PC CUP.
Donating blood, even during a pandemic, provides the safest conditions possible. D. Gutauskas reminds that NKC is not a medical institution, so he will not agree with the patients there, only completely healthy people are asked to donate blood. In addition, the blood center conducts prophylactic testing of staff for Covid-19, and the center also follows established guidelines to ensure the maximum safe environment for donors and staff.
