The port city officer publicly announced that the beards, which had been grown for three years, would not fail and it would be better to leave the army. However, now the man has shaved his beard, in public. Lawyers note that the Klaipėda resident was in a hurry: after starting legal disputes, he could win them.

A traveler from Klaipėda, as well as a volunteer soldier Aurimas Mockus, were sitting on the chair of a beard, and cut a 6-inch long Aurimas beard, which had been growing for three years. The man decided to take that step after realizing that he could not win against the system.

The unusual story began in the last months of last year. Then, while traveling through Nagorno-Karabakh, Lithuanian National Defense Volunteer Force officer Aurimas read on the internet a public reminder of the leadership of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, which caused him resentment, that the soldiers must be without beards.

“The volunteers got stuck somewhere with their beards. Someone got caught somewhere, maybe where they didn’t have it, in the public eye, journalists or someone captured it, and it all started when the statute came into being, the statute requires it, but it’s been tolerant of us, so far away. But they were so insulted that by revealing that information, the commanders took more cardinal measures, ”says Officer Aurimas Mockus.

The man later became very outraged by such demands and even distributed a video in which he expressed all his thoughts about the military leadership’s requirement that soldiers shave their beards.

“It would probably not be a doubt to those commanders that the man who protects his back has a beard or no beard, whether or not he has a leg, whether or not he likes his face. when you defend your back, you will find that you do not care at all, “says A. Mockus.

In addition, the man promised to suspend service in the army, as he could not participate in the lineup or exercises with the beard.

“They will suspend me from my service, I will no longer be active, I know that there is an order to remove me from the service, I will not give up, I will lay down, because I will not go to exercise just for the sake of it.” I can’t wear a uniform and a beard, “says Mockus.

After this video, the man received a lot of comments. Other soldiers also wrote opinions. Some supported the officer’s fight for the soldiers ‘right to choose whether to wear a beard or not, while others explained that order is order and commanders’ orders must be obeyed. The representatives of the Lithuanian Armed Forces also did not give up. Commenting on this gesture of resistance by the officer to TV3 News, they claimed that they had even carried out an official inspection as a result.

“The personal opinions of the soldiers may be different, but public criticism of the orders of the soldiers is prohibited. They are obliged to follow the established procedure and are subject to higher standards of conduct and appearance than other Lithuanian citizens. This is not This is required only by military leaders, but also by Lithuanian citizens. Therefore, we are currently not considering any other exceptions to the current and recently updated regime. We would like to add that we have not received any request from A. Mockus to resign from service, it has been subjected to an official inspection, he has been warned. “

So Aurimas finally landed and decided to shave off his beard.

“I would very much like to point out that we did it too, although we didn’t want to do it, and I’m not the only one. There are people who left the army for voluntary national defense just because of that order, but each one chooses and makes his own decision, ”said A. Mockus.

Broadcast the beard shave in public, straight from the beard chair. Still, lawyers say the man was quick to shave off his beard. If he had gone to court, he was likely to win the case. Instructing soldiers not to have beards is potentially unconstitutional. Especially if the beard is forced to shave volunteer warriors. These men and women fulfill their duty to their country by dedicating their free time, because they have permanent jobs or study.

“Every volunteer is a civilian for most of his life, he has his own life, his own freedom of expression. These rules may in certain respects, in relation to certain volunteers, violate their right to freedom of expression, which is a constitutional violation of the law, it can discriminate against them on the surface, ”says lawyer Jurita Repšienė.

And the opinions of Klaipeda residents on whether or not to force soldiers to shave their beards differed. Some reasoned based on logic, others on emotions:

“The most beautiful man’s accessory”.

“If you line up in the square, well, the beards must be fixed. If a soldier is not a soldier but an operative and you don’t see his alignment in the square, I don’t see any problem. Self-expression here is such an aspect. If you allow yourself tattoos, why shouldn’t beards be allowed? “

“I don’t like men with beards at all.”

And yet, if some bearded soldier were to go to court and win the case, according to lawyers, it would set a precedent that could significantly adjust the instructions for a soldier not to have a beard in the future.
